What are the different types of glass window frames?

There are many types of window frames available. Read on to learn about the different glass window frames you can choose from in Austin Texas!

When we talk about the frame that holds a glass window, one of our main concerns is the transfer of heat. While metal frames are still available, we also have the option of using vinyl, fiberglass, wood, and newer composite materials, all of which slow down the transfer of heat better than metal.

Metal Frames

Aluminum is incredibly strong and light and requires little maintenance. It and other metals also transfer heat very well, which can be a downside when trying to save energy and cost. To reduce the flow of heat, metal frames may have a thermal break, which is a strip of plastic placed between the inside and outside of the frame and the sash.

Composite Frames

Similar to composite wood boards used for some decks, composite window frames use a mixture of wood products mixed with plastics. This combination of materials produces a product that can be stronger than wood or plastic alone and insulates better. It is also more moisture and rot resistant.

Fiberglass Frames

Like composite frames, fiberglass window frames are composed of fibers mixed with plastic, in this case glass fibers instead of wood. Also like composite frames, they are strong, moisture and rot resistant, and insulate well. Sometimes they feature air cavities that are further insulated.

Vinyl Frames

Vinyl frames are generally made of PVC, or polyvinyl chloride. On its own, PVC doesn’t offer sun protection, so UV stabilizers are added to keep them from prematurely degrading in sunlight. These do not need to be painted and resist moisture well. They also have hollow cavities that can be further insulated, making them better than wood frames in this regard.

Wood Frames

Wood window frames insulate well but are not moisture resistant on their own and need more maintenance. They can be covered in aluminum or vinyl to remedy this, but metal will reduce its insulation properties.
